Clothing & Dress Guide

Dressing in China

What to wear and where to shop.

Seasonal Overview

  • **Summer (Jun-Sep):** Hot and humid, 30-38°C. Light cotton, shorts, sandals. Bring an umbrella for sudden rain.
  • **Winter (Dec-Feb):** Mild in Guangzhou/Shenzhen (10-15°C), cold in the north. A light jacket usually suffices in the south.
  • **Spring/Autumn:** Most pleasant. Light layers recommended.

Shopping for Clothes

  • **Wholesale markets:** You're already visiting them for sourcing — grab some pieces for yourself at wholesale prices!
  • **Shopping malls:** Tee Mall (天河城 Tiānhéchéng), Grandview Mall (正佳广场 Zhèngjiā Guǎngchǎng) in Guangzhou.
  • **Online:** Taobao (淘宝 Táobǎo) has everything at all price points.

Dress Code Tips

  • **Business meetings:** Smart casual is fine in most industries. Full suit only for very formal occasions.
  • **Wholesale markets:** Dress comfortably — you'll walk miles. Sneakers are essential.
  • **Temples:** Cover shoulders and knees out of respect.
