Accommodation in China
Whether you're visiting for a few days or staying for months, here's how to find the right place to stay.
Short-Term: Hotels
- **International chains:** Marriott, Hilton, IHG are available in major cities.
- **Local chains:** 7 Days Inn (7天), Home Inn (如家) are budget-friendly and everywhere.
- **Booking platforms:** Trip.com (formerly Ctrip) has the best English interface. Booking.com and Agoda also work.
Mid-Term: Serviced Apartments
- **Ziroom (自如):** Good for 1-6 month stays. Clean, furnished apartments.
- **Airbnb:** Available but less common than in Western countries. More expensive.
- **Tip:** Many sourcing agents and expats rent through local agents — ask in expat WeChat groups.
Long-Term: Renting an Apartment
- **Popular expat areas in Guangzhou:** Tianhe (天河), Zhujiang New Town (珠江新城), Yuexiu (越秀)
- **Rental process:**
- 1. Find an agent (中介 zhōngjiè) — they charge one month's rent as commission
- 2. View apartments (usually available immediately)
- 3. Sign contract (usually 1 year minimum)
- 4. Pay deposit (usually 2 months rent) + first month
- **Documents needed:** Passport, visa, residence registration
