Accommodation in China

Whether you're visiting for a few days or staying for months, here's how to find the right place to stay.

Short-Term: Hotels

  • **International chains:** Marriott, Hilton, IHG are available in major cities.
  • **Local chains:** 7 Days Inn (7天 Qītiān), Home Inn (如家 Rújiā) are budget-friendly and everywhere.
  • **Booking platforms:** Trip.com (formerly Ctrip) has the best English interface. Booking.com and Agoda also work.

Mid-Term: Serviced Apartments

  • **Ziroom (自如 Zìrú):** Good for 1-6 month stays. Clean, furnished apartments.
  • **Airbnb:** Available but less common than in Western countries. More expensive.
  • **Tip:** Many sourcing agents and expats rent through local agents — ask in expat WeChat groups.

Long-Term: Renting an Apartment

  • **Popular expat areas in Guangzhou:** Tianhe (天河 Tiānhé), Zhujiang New Town (珠江新城 Zhūjiāng Xīnchéng), Yuexiu (越秀 Yuèxiù)
  • **Rental process:**
  • 1. Find an agent (中介 zhōngjiè) — they charge one month's rent as commission
  • 2. View apartments (usually available immediately)
  • 3. Sign contract (usually 1 year minimum)
  • 4. Pay deposit (usually 2 months rent) + first month
  • **Documents needed:** Passport, visa, residence registration
